Kigongo – Busisi Bridge Across Lake Victoria’s Mwanza Gulf in Mwanza Region

Project Information

The proposed Kigongo/Busisi Bridge is located about 34.5 Km from Mwanza Town along Usagara – Geita – Buzirayombo – Kyamyorwa road (B163). The Kigongo/Busisi ferry crossing provides the main link from Mwanza to Western parts of Tanzania and neighbouring countries. The crossing is approximately 3,200m wide and two ferry boats currently ply this crossing. The proposed Bridge will replace the ferries to accommodate significantly more traffic volumes along the route as well as improve safety of users.

Feasibility study, detailed engineering design, ESIA and preparation of tender documents has been completed in 2018 under financing of the Government of Tanzania.

The Bridge (3000m) and its approaches (1.7 Km) are designed to dual carriageway standard. The Main Bridge is Extra Dosed Box Girder Type 520m long with 3 Cable Stayed Pylons, the Approach Bridge is Pre-stressed Concrete Beam Type 1240m long both sides and foundations consist of 2.5m diameter cast insitu RC piles resting on Lake bed rock.
